College Cost Analysis
« Back to College Funding | Family Contributions
In 2008, the cost of a four-year program at some state universities, including tuition and room and board,
was close to $80,000. At the same time, a four year program at an Ivy League college was nearly three times that amount.
While the economic inflation rate for much of the past century was 3%, college costs have generally gone up even more.
How much will your child’s education cost? Four basic factors will help determine your answer:
- When will your children enter college?
- What type of college are they likely to attend - in-state public, out-of-state public, private, elite private or community college?
- How much does it currently cost for four years of tuition, room and board, books and fees at a school of that type?
- How much will inflation affect the cost by the time your children are ready to enroll?
- Some of these questions may be difficult to answer; however, as a rule most parents hope to send their children to a school at least as good as their alma mater.
Planning for college is a complex task that is most effective when tailored to your specific goals and needs.
